David Batchelor and João Paulo Feliciano
Curator - Jacopo Crivelli Visconti
David Batchelor and Joao Paulo Feliciano both showed work at the 26th Bienal of Sao Paulo in 2004, and their work is in many ways complimentary. Batchelor was born in Scotland in 1955 and has lived in London for the last 20 years. He has exhibited widely in the UK, Europe and the Americas. Over the last decade he has explored the characteristic effects of color in the modern city and produced a wide variety of three-dimensional works using found industrial materials such as warehouse dollies, lightboxes and plastic containers. The works often use simple materials but also subtle effects, which result form extensive observation and development in the studio. Batchelor has also written a highly influential book, Chromophobia, on the understanding of color in the West.
João Paulo Feliciano was born in Portugal in 1963 and lives in Lisbon. After years of experimentation in different fields - in addition to his practise as an artist, he has worked with music and design, and is one of the organizers of the Lisbon Design Biennial - he has experieced significant success , with one person exhibitions at , among other venues, the Fundação Serralves in Porto. Through the use of relatively simple elements, Feliciano has in his installations created a new way of experiencing space. This was evident in his vast but weightless work Slit Sunny Window, which was commisioned for the 26th Bienal de São Paulo .
For the exhibition at Galeria Leme, both artists will show existing works and new ones made in response to the venue. The gallery, designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha, is a dynamic and highly suggestive space for both artists.
